Spine Surgery

Do I need a Neurosurgeon or an Orthopedics Surgeon?

I am frequently asked this question. In the past this has been a contentious issue. People used to say that a Neurosurgeon knows the most about nerves because of their experience with the brain. Orthopedic surgeons specialize in the use of instrumentation and preparing bone to hold the vertebra in place when fusion is required. Modern techniques such as disc replacement also lend themselves to Orthopedic surgeons experience with joint replacement. So who should you choose?

The answer is a Spine Surgeon. Medicine has progressed to the point where surgeons are sub-specialized. This extra training is called a Fellowship. A Fellowship in Spine Surgery is an extra year focusing solely on the evaluation and treatment of spinal disorders. It provides a more focused training program than the generalized experience during residency in Neurosurgery or Orthopedics.

All of the surgeons at Peak Orthopedics are Fellowship trained in their respective sub-specialties to give you the best care. Ask if your surgeon is fellowship trained.
